Healthy Aging Program

Last Monday I hosted an adult program, Healthy Aging, presented by an Aurora nurse. I had a turnout of seven people which I thought was pretty good since it was my first try. I held it on a Monday morning because we have a set of patrons who are used to coming to the library at that time for programs. We have a Leisure Timers group that meets every other Monday. A few of our regular patrons came but most were new including some social work students. Everyone enjoyed the speaker, Marge Hendrickson, and some asked her to speak at other events. In March I will have a low vision or fall prevention program that I hope will go over well. I will probably go with the same time slot.

  1. Congratulations on a successful program, Lisa! Are you planning to carve a niche for your adult health programs with daytime events? Do you anticipate presenting any such programs in the evening or Saturdays? I'm just trying to get a handle on the variables which equal the best success. Again, good for you!!

  2. Congrats on your successful program, Lisa!

I've done some health programming with the Alzheimer's Association of SE Wisconsin -- Dementia/Alzheimer's, "Nourish Your Noggin", and "Maximize Your Brain Health". These have been held in the day with about 20 attendees. Their outreach programs are offered at no cost and I've found them easy to work with.

  3. Since the first programs I am trying are geared toward seniors (next up is a low vision program in March), I am scheduling them for a time that many older sdults are used to coming to the library. When I start having women's health programs I think I will schedule them for weeknights or possibly Saturday.

  4. I belong to a resource group that helps seniors, by offering S.M.A.R.T. programs every month (Senior Matters And Retirement Topics)

These are held at the same time and the same place every month with healthy snacks.
They start at 10:00 AM and go until 11:30. We always have a large turnout of at least 25 and up to 75 people. I think it helps to have a continual program with a yearly calendar planned out in advance. Our seniors are creatures of habit.
Working with the Senior and retirement homes helps our attendance greatly.

We have a presence on twitter to get new ideas for programming and feed back. http://twitter.com/seniorcaregrp

As a reference librarian belonging to this group, my role is to make access to information easy for this group of people.
My role has been to bring books and resources the library owns on the topic into the seminars. Also providing a printed sheet of resources we have available on the topic.
I also take the time and explain easy access at the library. Surprising how many seniors are intimidated by the OPAC and once shown are relieved at its ease of use.
